What Is a Spay & Neuter Surgery?

Spaying and neutering are routine surgeries with the objective of preventing your animal from reproducing. Spaying is performed on female pets and involves removing the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. A successful spaying procedure will make your female pet unable to reproduce while eliminating her heat cycle and decreasing her breeding-related behavior. Neutering is performed on male animals and involves the removal of the testicles to eliminate fertility.

Important Reasons to Spay or Neuter Your Pet

Reproductive surgeries are some of the most responsible procedures you can give your pet. Spaying and neutering can add years to their life, eliminate the probability of certain cancers, and help to decrease the number of animals in shelters and needing to be euthanized every year. Here are some additional benefits to spaying or neutering your pet:

  • Decreases aggressive behavior in male pets
  • Reduces the desire for pets to roam and seek mates
  • Reduces pet overpopulation and pets needing to be euthanized
  • Decreases the risk of mammary gland tumors
  • Ends heat cycles, bleeding, and the act of calling for a mate
  • Reduces or eliminates the act of marking or spraying
  • Decreases or eliminates the risk of ovarian and uterine cancers
  • Decreases or eliminates the risk of prostate cancer and testicular cancer

Our Careful Process

Our first and foremost priority when performing any veterinary surgery is safety. We provide detailed preliminary exams and testing, checking your pet from head to tail with blood work available. Based on our findings, we will determine if your pet is ready to undergo successful surgery and sedation services. Once we’ve concluded your cat or dog is ready for their procedure, we will schedule the surgery within a week or two at your convenience.

On the day of surgery, you will drop them off at our practice and they will be ready for pickup the same day. We will send your pet home with pain medications, antibiotics if needed, collars or suits, and detailed at-home instructions to keep them comfortable and relaxed during the recovery process. After 10-14 days, we will invite you and your pet back to our practice to remove their sutures at no additional charge.

Spay & Neuter FAQs

We are doting pet parents just like you. Our team is happy to answer your questions and address your concerns once you’ve arrived at our office. Here are some frequently asked questions regarding spaying and neutering for dogs and cats:

What is the best age to spay or neuter your pet?

Your pet should receive surgery before they get too old to promote optimal healing and avoid other complications. Generally, veterinarians agree your pet should be spayed or neutered around six months old.

Are there any risks associated with this procedure?

There are slight risks with any surgery, but a spay and neuter procedure is one of the most common vet surgeries. Rest assured, we will run detailed blood tests and physical exams beforehand, minimizing the risk factors wherever we can.

Do pets become overweight after this procedure?

We believe this is a common misconception. It’s common for your pet’s metabolism to slow down a bit after the procedure, and oftentimes, your pet may become more docile. However, weight gain is unlikely to happen with the right diet and regular exercise.
